But first a word about Girard and his brilliant book. Girard began his career with a theory of Mimetic Desire. Not only do we all desire, but Reviews: René Girard uncovered its roots in several episodes of the Old Testament: the non-sacrifice of Isaac by Abraham, the story of Joseph in which the victim appears to be innocent and the Book .

Girard found examples of this everywhere he looked. But in the Bible scapegoating was exposed for the evil impulses it represented. That, he decided, is especially true in the story of Jesus. The title echoes Jesus' words: "I saw Satan falling like lightning from heaven." Girard persuades us that even as our world grows increasingly violent the power of the Christ-event is so great that the evils of scapegoating and sacrifice are being defeated even now. A new community, God's nonviolent kingdom, is being realized - even now.4/5(6).

The rites and myths from almost every human culture left a trace of this foundational murder. I had already completed my Ph.D. in theology before I ever picked up a book by Girard. Girard says founding myths are not imaginary things presented in the misleading guise of historical or literal narrative. They reflect a very literal history, veiled in the misleading guise of symbolic imagery. The central plot of much myth is a very real and recurrent historical event. Myth itself is a lie humanity has been telling itself.

Golsan offers a somewhat chronological overview of mimetic theory, leading from Girard's observations of the nature of desire in literature, (chapter 1) following the bouncing ball into myth (chapter 3) and the history of sacrifice and scapegoating that supposedly undergirds it.

(chapter 2) Chapter four is entitled "The Bible: Antidote to Violence," and clearly lays out perhaps the most controversial aspect of Girardian Cited by: Rene Girard and Myth book. "For the student of myth the book marks a promising prospect for the future direction of myth studies; for the Girardian, it signals the move from marginal to mainstream of a theory that not only rocks the closed hierarchy of academic disciplines but may open the way to an eventual, even wider, interinstitutional dialogue.".

René Girard () was a French historian, literary critic, and philosopher of social science, whose work belongs to the tradition of anthropological philosophy.

His theories and work have influenced. Rene Girard, Professor Emeritus at Stanford University, began developing his theories over 40 years ago, while researching the great stories in literature.

He wanted to know what made these stories great and he discovered that they had some similarities. He further began to research the rituals and mythologies of primitive people. F rom the earliest days of Christianity, the Gospels’ resemblance to certain myths has been used as an argument against Christian faith.

When pagan apologists for the official pantheism of the Roman empire denied that the death-and-resurrection myth of Jesus differed in any significant way from the myths of Dionysus, Osiris, Adonis, Attis, etc., they failed to stem the rising. René Pommier has written a book about Girard with the ironic title Girard Ablaze Rather Than Enlightened in which he asserts that Girard's readings of myths and Bible stories—the basis of some of his most important claims—are often tendentious.

Girard's most important book is Things Hidden since the Foundation of the World. In the form of a dialogue with two psychiatrists, Jean-Michel Oughourlian and Guy Lefort, its format is a triptych: (1) Fundamental Anthropology, (2) The Judeo-Christian Scriptures, (3) Individual Psychology.

In this comprehensive introduction, to French critic Rene Girard, Richard Golsan focuses on Girard's theory of myth and its connections to his broader exploration of the origins of suffering and violence in Western culture.

Reading mythology through Girardian eyes is an interesting exercise because it changes the way one interprets history. Subsequently holding positions at Duke University, Bryn Mawr College, and Johns Hopkins University, Girard published his first book, Mensonge Romantique et Vérité Romanesque,in (translated as Deceit, Desire, and the Novel: Self and Other in Literary Structurein ).

Girard finds this scapegoating dynamic at the heart of most myths. Oedipus, King of Thebes, had sex with his mother and killed his father; as a. René Girard A Biographical Sketch By James G. Williams Published in: The Girard Reader. Edited by James G.

First published inViolence and the Sacred marked the starting point of a substantial new phase of his thought. In this vivid study of human evil, Girard explores violence as it is represented and occurs throughout history, literature and myth.

Primarily, as Girard himself says towards the end, this is a book about anthropology: about the human impulse to imitate, to envy, to seek an outlet for the collective violent impulses of a community against a common victim.
